No sweat! Though we’ve had some pros in our ranks, most of us are amateurs. You DO NOT have to be able to read music to perform, and perform well! All that is required is the desire (and of course, some ability) to sing. Our Directors us a variety of creative methods to help our members learn the music and improve their vocal skills along the way. Remember, you have to start somewhere!
You become a full member upon signing a Singing Member Agreement and payment of your concert cycle dues. Then you will receive an orientation where you will be provided a Member Handbook and introduced to mentors— veteran members who assist our new members in becoming acclimated during their first season. You will also be given a voice placement session with your director. This session helps determine which section (Tenor I, Tenor II, Baritone, Bass, Soprano I, Soprano II, Alto I, Alto II) is most appropriate for your vocal range.
GMCH and BCWC perform a December Holiday concert as the combined chorus, Bayou City Choral. GMCH generally performs one other regular concert June. GMCH rehearsals for these concerts generally occur each Monday evening from 7 — 10 p.m., beginning about 8 —10 weeks prior to the concert. BCWC generally performs one other concert in April. BCWC rehearsals for these concerts generally occur each Tuesday evening from 6:30 — 9:30 p.m. beginning about 10 —12 weeks prior to the concert. BCWC will sometimes join GMCH in one of their spring/summer concerts and perform as part of the combined chorus.
Members are expected to perform in all concerts.
For both choruses: Additional weekend rehearsals may be required as a concert date nears, and combined rehearsals are sometimes required. Beyond these minimum requirements, you may choose your own level of involvement. Please keep in mind, however, that we do perform all of our music from memory. As a community chorus, BCPA offers an abundance of social enrichment, outreach and volunteer opportunities for its members throughout the year. So the question becomes, “how much time would you like to give?”
Yes, as a member of GMCH or BCWC, one also becomes a member of the combined chorus. We also feature several auditioned small ensemble groups that perform at regular concerts and other special engagements.
If you are not comfortable being on stage with GMCH or BCWC just yet, you may become a Non-Performing Member. These individuals help the organization in all manner of volunteer roles based upon skills and preference–including recruiting, choreography, clerical, marketing, fundraising, box office, and other areas. BCPA is a volunteer-driven organization, and can always use a helping hand! To volunteer, send an email to email@example.com and ask our Volunteer Coordinator for an “Area of Volunteer Interest” form and we will be glad to mail, e-mail or fax one to you.
This season the choruses began performing at the Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston or MATCH. Other special appearances and free concerts may be scheduled throughout the season at various venues. For instance, we’ve performed at Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church, and at Festival Hill Institute in Round Top, TX.
It is the policy of BCPA that no member is denied participation based upon financial limitation, and we offer a scholarship program to assist with dues and other limited expenses. However, dues help defray our operating costs, and singers are expected to pay dues except in hardship situations.
Basic membership dues are $180 for the full September through June season, payable in two increments. This does not include the cost of standard formal performance attire, typically a one-time expense of $100 and up. Additional expenses may be incurred for attire, costumes, props, special rehearsals, and special events.
